Puberty is a curious and annoying time. Girls' bodies begin to do freakish things--or, as in Margaret's case, they don't do freakish things nearly as fast as girls wish they would. Adolescents are often so relie...

I met a 14 year old girl with scoliosis. She seemed to be adjusting well to her condition and brace but her mother was in tears over the situation. The basic idea for that book came from that meeting and since I wrote that book, new ways for treating scoliosis have been developed. Deenie has been banned more than any of my other books because of the discussion of masturbation. Masturabation is such a frightening idea to some adults they would rather ban a book than talk to their children about it. I am glad to hear that so many people enjoyed reading Deenie just as much as I enjoyed writing it...

Going all the way is still a taboo subject in young adult literature. Judy Blume was the first author to write candidly about a sexually active teen, and she's been defending teenagers' rights to read about such subjects ever since. Here, Blume tells a convincing tale of first love--a love that seems strong and true enough to last forever. Katherine loves Michael so much, in fact, that she's willing to lose her virginity to him, and, as the months go by, it gets harder and harder for her to imagine living without him. However, something happens when they are separated for the summe...

Who is better at presenting a Judy Blume story than the author herself? Blume effectively portrays each of her characters from the grandparents to the mynah bird ("Hello, Stupid"). Because she knows exactly what she intended, Blume enlivens this story of an extended family on vacation. Pace, timing and the lisp of the "little kids" make for a fun listening experience. The narrator adds the final flourish when she sings several times as the text demands. This delightful story is perfect for its audience and ends with Blume promoting reading. S.G.B. Initially, the differences between Caitlin Somers and Victoria Leonard (or Vix, as Caitlin christens her) draw them together: privileged Caitlin is wild and outspoken, beautiful but emotionally fragile, while working-class Vix is shy, reserved, and plain in comparison. Blume's reading of this sequel to Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing shows the humorous side of sibling rivalry. In Peter Hatcher's tone of disbelief at the news of his mother's pregnancy, Blume accurately re-creates the melodramatic tone of a fifth-grade boy. In juxtaposition to Peter is Fudge, his four-year-old brother. Blume's carefree prattle is right on target for him. Peter's account of Fudge's antics, a constant embarrassment to his family, will keep the listener amused. Elementary school fans will enjoy Blume's comic performance of typical family situations.
